UI Insight  Heuristic Evaluations
Steven@UIinsight.com

Defined:

Heuristic evaluations are detailed, systematic reviews using proven guidelines, or heuristics, to determine what can be improved in an application or web site.

The heuristics are based on knowledge gained from usability testing, standards of platform technologies, and client specific guidelines.  They vary from such generic guidelines as Recognition rather than recall , Jakob Nielsen's sixth usability heuristic, to such specifics as: Avoid italicized text on the web because it is harder to read.

Examples:

The following heuristic evaluations demonstrate the usability issues that UI Insight can find in your software or web site.

  • BrakeBuddy
    (846 Kb pdf)
The homepage was reviewed in this evaluation and was used to solicit a contract from Master Concepts for the redesign and implementation of the www.BrakeBuddy.com web site which was completed in October 2002.

  • SunMarke
    (240 Kb pdf)
This evaluation of the SunMarke site gave SunMarke the insight and understanding they needed to drive the necessary changes with the site's developer Lance Jackson.  The site is currently being redesigned (Late 2002).

  • Arlo Braun
    (42 Kb pdf)
The site has been redesigned since this review was written and a number of the issues have been addressed while introducing a few others.

  • TIDF
    (663 Kb pdf)
The site has been redesigned since this review was written and has a different look and feel with many of the usability issues addressed. Unfortunately some of the basics have been missed in this rewrite including the homepage linking to itself.

  • IZOIC
    (1,109 Kb pdf)
The site has been redesigned since this review was written and also has a different look and feel. Unfortunately the site still misses the usability mark. One certainly has to question the choice of the photo of the young lady to represent their support department.
